IMDb has an annoying habit of showing the latest release date for movies. Most of the time, what you really want is the first release date. Trying to remember when that old movie Lawrence of Arabia came out? Well IMDb says it was released in 2013. This is silly. Sure, the movie got a 4K re-release for a film festival and an updated Blu-Ray cover, but that's probably not what you were wondering when you looked up the release date. IMDb shows all release dates for movies on the /releaseinfo sub page of a title, but usually people just want the oldest entry. That's what this service returns. You just pass in an IMDb ID and you'll get back a first release date for that movie. (e.g. /tt0056172 ). If you prefer a more human readable date format, try ?format=long. And if you're seeing an unexpected date or an error, try ?debug=true.
